Te mapa
Rājsamand is in the Mewar region of southern Rajasthan, north of Udaipur, beside the large artificial lake that gives it its name. From above, the water dominates the map: a broad, irregular sheet held back by a long embankment. The town, together with neighbouring Kankroli, spreads along the shore, and rocky Aravalli ridges rise in the surrounding country.
Maharana Raj Singh of Mewar created the lake in the 1670s. Its embankment is lined with carved marble pavilions and steps known as Nauchowki. Nearby stone tablets carry the Raj Prashasti, often described as the longest Sanskrit inscription carved in stone. The district is also one of India's major sources of marble, and quarries mark the land around it.
A Rājsamand map poster puts the lake at the centre of the composition. Streets gather along the shoreline, and roads run out toward the hills and marble works. The contrast between the smooth expanse of water and the fine texture of the town gives the print a calm, spacious feel.
The large reservoir fills much of the frame with an irregular outline of bays and inlets. It makes a strong open shape against the tighter pattern of streets.
Marble steps and pavilions line the water along the lake's embankment, marking a straight, deliberate edge where the built town meets the lake.
Beyond the town, low Aravalli ridges and marble quarries break up the landscape. Roads wind between them and link Rājsamand to Udaipur and Nathdwara.
