Rāmgarh is in the Shekhawati region of Rajasthan, on the sandy plains where the Thar Desert begins. The town was built by wealthy merchant families, and its map still reflects that. The centre is a dense network of lanes between large courtyard houses, temples and step wells, all enclosed within a compact area.
The town is best known for its painted havelis, whose walls are covered in murals, and for its memorial chhatris, domed pavilions built for the merchant families.
