Te mapa
Rantepao is the main town of North Toraja in the highlands of South Sulawesi, and its shape on a map is decided by the Sa'dan River. The town follows the water through a valley, with a compact centre of market streets and roads that thin out quickly into villages, rice fields and steep, forested slopes.
Toraja is known far beyond Indonesia for its tongkonan houses with sweeping, boat-shaped roofs and for elaborate funeral ceremonies that can last several days. Many visitors come to Rantepao as a base for exploring the surrounding villages, burial cliffs and terraced fields, which are linked to the town by winding mountain roads.
A Rantepao map poster shows a town defined by its landscape: a river cutting through the centre, a small grid of streets beside it, and roads that trace the valleys into the hills. The result is spare and organic, with the river giving the design a strong, flowing line from edge to edge.
The river runs through the valley and past the town centre, creating the strongest line on the map and explaining why Rantepao grew in its long, narrow shape.
A small cluster of straighter streets marks the commercial heart, where shops, the market and transport connections are concentrated before the valley opens up.
Narrow roads wind out of town toward Toraja villages and terraced fields, curving with the steep terrain and fading gently toward the edges of the frame.
