Samarinda, the capital of East Kalimantan, is shaped by the Mahakam, one of the largest rivers in Borneo. The river sweeps through the city in a broad curve, and the older centre lines its northern bank, with markets, ports and government districts close to the water.
Away from the river, the streets climb into low, rolling hills, and the road network becomes more irregular as it follows the terrain. Several bridges cross the Mahakam, linking the two banks. On the waterfront stands the large Islamic Center mosque, one of the city's best-known buildings.
