Te mapa
Palangkaraya, capital of Central Kalimantan, was founded in 1957. President Sukarno laid its first stone and hoped it might one day become Indonesia's national capital. That ambition shows on the map. Instead of a narrow river town, the city has wide boulevards, a large central roundabout and roads radiating outwards far beyond the built-up area.
The Kahayan River runs along the eastern side of the city, broad and winding, with a long bridge crossing it. Older riverside settlements and markets hug the bank. On a Palangkaraya map poster, the wide dark curve of the river and the straight lines of the planned roads create a strong contrast.
Around the city lie the peat swamp forests of Borneo. Much of the land stays unbuilt, and the long straight roads reach through it towards other towns in the province. The result is a spacious, open layout, with blocks scattered along the arterials and large green areas between them.
A large traffic circle sits at the heart of the planned city. Main roads radiate from it, giving the centre a star-like structure.
A broad river winds along the eastern edge, crossed by a long bridge. Riverside settlements and markets cluster on its banks.
Beyond the built-up area, long straight roads run through lowland peat forest. On the map they show up as clean lines across wide empty spaces.
