Te mapa
Sibu stands on the Rajang, Malaysia's longest river, at the point where the Igan branch splits off toward the sea. The town grew as a trading port for the interior of Sarawak, reached by boats travelling up and down the river. On a map the broad water is impossible to miss, running in a wide curve along the town's edge.
The older commercial centre faces the waterfront, with wharves and the express boat terminal along the bank and a tight grid of shophouse streets behind. Further from the river, newer residential areas spread out along roads, and the land around them is low and wet, cut by drainage channels and smaller streams.
Sibu is closely associated with the Foochow Chinese community who settled there from the early twentieth century, and it is sometimes called Swan City, with the swan as its emblem. A Sibu map poster shows a town that still faces its river, where the waterline defines the shape of everything built beside it.
The wide river runs along the town's edge, lined by wharves and terminals, and dominates the map with its broad, sweeping curve.
Close to the town the river divides, with the Igan branching away, a meeting of waters that gives the map a distinctive fork.
Behind the waterfront, a compact grid of short streets marks the historic trading centre, denser and more regular than the areas around it.
