Te mapa
Pontianak lies almost exactly on the equator in West Kalimantan, on the island of Borneo. The Kapuas, Indonesia's longest river, passes through the city, and the Landak joins it here, so the map divides into three sectors of land separated by broad water. Streets and canals spread across low, marshy ground on each side of the confluence.
The city was founded in 1771 by Sultan Syarif Abdurrahman Alkadrie. The Kadriah Palace and the Jami Mosque still stand near the point where the rivers meet. North of the centre, the Equator Monument marks where the zero line of latitude crosses the city, and around the equinoxes it draws visitors for the moment when upright objects cast almost no shadow.
A Pontianak map poster turns that river junction into the centre of the composition. Wide channels form a rough Y shape, bridges link the districts, and a fine lacework of smaller canals and lanes fills the rest. It is a distinctive map, unlike a coastal or grid city.
The Kapuas and Landak meet in the middle of the city, dividing Pontianak into separate banks linked by bridges. The rivers form the dominant shape of the map.
The sultan's palace and the old mosque stand close to the confluence, marking the city's founding point and its oldest riverside quarter.
The Equator Monument stands in the northern part of the city, and the equator itself crosses the urban area, which few cities can claim.

Koteā ko Pontianak
Pontianak's identity is tied to its rivers and its position on the equator, and both come through clearly on a map. It makes a good gift for people from West Kalimantan and for anyone who has crossed the Kapuas.
Personalise the title and subtitle, perhaps with the equator's coordinates or a family date, and pick one of five styles: Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand.
