Te mapa
Bangka Island lies off the east coast of Sumatra, separated from it by the Bangka Strait. Its outline is large and irregular, with several long headlands and wide bays that give it a sprawling, star-like shape. Roads run between towns across low, mostly flat land. The island makes up the main part of the Bangka Belitung Islands province.
For centuries Bangka has been one of the world's main tin-producing regions. Mining has left thousands of water-filled pits across the land, known locally as kolong, and detailed maps show them as scattered small lakes. The coast is known for beaches lined with large, rounded granite boulders.
A Bangka Island map poster shows the provincial capital, Pangkal Pinang, near the east coast, with the densest streets on the island. On the west coast, the old port of Muntok faces across the strait towards Sumatra. Between the two, long roads cross plantations and forest and link smaller towns in a loose network.
The narrow strait between the island and Sumatra runs along its western side. The channel gives that side of the poster a clean, clearly defined edge.
The provincial capital is the island's largest town, set a short way inland from the east coast. Its streets form the most concentrated patch of detail on an otherwise open map.
Across the interior, flooded pits left by tin mining show up as small, irregular pools. They give the land an unusual speckled texture found only on Bangka.
