Te mapa
Metro lies in the lowlands of Lampung province in southern Sumatra. From above, it looks unlike most Indonesian towns: its roads run in long, straight lines and meet at right angles, dividing the land into a regular pattern of blocks, fields and settlements.
The layout goes back to a colonisation programme of the 1930s, when the Dutch colonial government resettled farming families from Java here and planned villages along an irrigation network. A Metro map poster makes that planning very clear, with canals and roads running in parallel across the landscape.
Over time the town grew into a regional centre with schools and markets, but its original structure remains easy to read. The grid of roads and canals continues out into the rice fields, so the map has an almost architectural order compared with the winding streets of other Sumatran cities.
Straight roads laid out in the 1930s divide the town into regular blocks, one of the most orderly street patterns in the region.
Canals follow the same planned lines as the roads, forming long parallel strokes that link the town with the surrounding paddy fields.
Beyond the centre, the grid carries on as roads between fields and villages, so the pattern extends right to the edge of the poster.

Koteā ko Metro
Metro's history is written into its roads, and many families here trace their story back to the first settlers from Java. A map of the town honours that story in a clear, simple form.
Add Kota Metro or your village name to the title, a family year below, and edit the coordinates line. Choose Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand, as files or a printed poster.
