Te mapa
Bintulu lies on the central coast of Sarawak, on Borneo, where the Kemena River reaches the South China Sea. The original town grew along the riverbank, and from above its centre is a compact grid of shophouse streets facing the water. Newer districts extend along the coast and inland, with the airport, housing estates and roads reaching into the surrounding lowland.
Since offshore natural gas was discovered in the 1970s, Bintulu has become one of Malaysia's major energy centres. The Malaysia LNG complex and the deep-water Bintulu Port, north-east of the town at Tanjung Kidurong, dominate that part of the coastline, and the town has grown quickly around them. Similajau National Park lies a short distance further along the coast.
A Bintulu map poster shows both sides of the town: the river bends and old streets near the centre, and the large-scale geometry of the port and industrial zone on the coast. Printed in black and white, the curving Kemena, the long shoreline and the planned grids between them make a surprisingly elegant composition.
The river curves past the old town before entering the sea. Its broad channel shapes the centre and separates it from the land on the opposite bank.
At Tanjung Kidurong, the deep-water port and LNG facilities form long piers, basins and plant layouts, the most engineered shapes on the map.
A long, gently curving shoreline runs north-east from the river mouth, with roads and new neighbourhoods following it toward the industrial zone.
