Te mapa
Rauma lies on the Gulf of Bothnia in western Finland, and its map has two very different characters. Inland, the centre is compact and irregular, while toward the sea the land breaks into bays, islets and harbour basins. Between them, a modern town of straight roads and residential areas spreads outward, and the port with its long quays takes up much of the shoreline.
The heart of it all is Old Rauma, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1991 and one of the largest surviving wooden towns in the Nordic countries. Its streets keep a medieval layout, narrow and slightly curved, lined with several hundred wooden houses. The town is also known for its lace-making tradition and for a local dialect that other Finns find famously hard to follow.
A Rauma map poster makes the old town easy to spot: a dense cluster of short, crooked streets that ignores the straighter planning around it. Out toward the coast, fragmented shorelines and small islands give the edges of the sheet an intricate, fraying quality. The contrast between that careful historic core and the open archipelago is what makes the design work.
The World Heritage wooden town appears as a small, dense tangle of medieval streets, distinctly different from the more regular districts that grew up around it later.
West of the town the coast breaks into inlets and small islands, so the map's edge becomes a complex outline of land and water.
Rauma's working port reaches into the sea with long, angular piers and basins, a strong geometric counterpoint to the organic shape of the coast.

Rauma suits anyone with roots in Satakunta, lovers of Nordic wooden architecture, or travellers who walked Old Rauma's lanes on a summer evening. The poster keeps both the historic centre and the sea in one calm composition.
