Rumia lies in northern Poland, just north-west of Gdynia, at the edge of the Tricity metropolitan area. The town sits in a valley between forested moraine uplands, and the railway and main road to Gdynia run along the valley floor. On a map the streets fill the low ground and then stop where the steep, wooded slopes begin.
The area has long been a Kashubian settlement. Its old parish church, one of the oldest in the region, marks the historic centre. The town grew quickly in the twentieth century, first as Gdynia's port developed and later as a residential town for Tricity commuters. The Zagórska Struga stream flows through it towards the Bay of Puck.

Forested moraine hills border the town and appear as broad, open areas. The street grid ends abruptly at their edges.
