Te mapa
Sagara sits on the western shore of Suruga Bay, where the coast runs in a long, gentle curve. Since 2005 it has been part of the city of Makinohara, but the old town still has a shape of its own: a compact set of streets near the water, a fishing harbour, and a river reaching the sea at the edge of town.
In the Edo period Sagara was a castle town. It is best remembered as the domain of Tanuma Okitsugu, the powerful eighteenth-century shogunate official. Later it earned an unusual place in industrial history. The Sagara oil field, worked from the Meiji era onward, is often described as the only oil field on the Pacific side of Japan.
Behind the coast the land rises to the Makinohara plateau, one of the country's best-known green tea districts. A Sagara map poster follows that sequence from sea to hills: first the shoreline and harbour, then the tight town streets, then farm roads spreading out into rows of tea. The layers stay easy to read even at the smaller print sizes.
A long, smooth coastline is the boldest edge on the poster. Breakwaters and harbour basins interrupt the curve where the fishing port meets the town.
The old centre keeps the compact, closely built street pattern of a small Edo-period domain seat, in contrast to the looser roads that spread along the coast.
Inland, narrow farm roads climb toward the Makinohara plateau, following field edges through one of the main green tea areas of Shizuoka.

Koteā ko Sagara
Sagara suits anyone with ties to the Shizuoka coast: surfers who know Suruga Bay, families from Makinohara, or tea lovers who have walked the plateau. The mix of sea, harbour and hillside fields makes a balanced, quiet picture.
