Te mapa
Salé sits on the northern bank of the Bou Regreg, exactly where the river meets the Atlantic. Rabat lies directly opposite, so the two cities mirror each other across the estuary. On the map the river is the central feature. It is a wide, curving band of water crossed by bridges, with a marina on the Salé side.
The old medina is enclosed by walls and gates, with Bab Mrisa among the best known. Inside, the streets form the dense, branching pattern typical of Moroccan old towns, with narrow lanes opening onto small squares. The Great Mosque stands within the medina. Beyond the walls, newer neighbourhoods spread inland in wider, more regular blocks.
In the seventeenth century Salé was home to corsairs who formed a small independent republic at the mouth of the river. Today a tramway crosses the Bou Regreg to link the city with Rabat. A Salé map poster shows the medina's tight weave next to open water, with the ocean close by.

A compact old town inside historic walls, filled with narrow lanes that twist and branch. It is a fine, dense texture that stands apart from the newer districts.
Bridges and the tramway span the Bou Regreg and tie Salé to Rabat. They appear as short, deliberate lines across open water.

Koteā ko Salé
Salé is often seen as Rabat's neighbour, but it has its own old town and its own history. A print of it suits anyone who grew up in its medina or lived by the river.
