Salmās Map Poster & Print
Salmās lies in West Azerbaijan province in northwestern Iran, on a fertile plain northwest of Lake Urmia with mountains rising toward the Turkish border. After a major earthquake in 1930 destroyed the old town, a new town was built nearby, and the map still shows the order of that planned reconstruction.
Wide avenues lead into a central focus, with regular blocks arranged around them, while orchards and fields press in from all sides. A Salmās map poster brings out that contrast between the planned centre and the looser farmland pattern, with irrigation channels and rural roads running across the plain.
The Salmās plain has long been an agricultural district, and the wider area has been home to Azerbaijani, Kurdish, Armenian and Assyrian communities over the centuries. Lake Urmia lies to the southeast, a large salt lake whose shrinking in recent decades has drawn wide attention.
