Salzgitter doesn't look like most German cities on a map. It was created in 1942 by joining dozens of existing villages around new ironworks. The result is polycentric. There is no single old town, but a set of distinct settlements spread over a wide area, with fields and woods between them and the steelworks as the industrial centre of gravity.
The largest district, Lebenstedt, was built as a planned town and has a correspondingly regular layout. Salzgitter-Bad in the south is an older spa town with salt springs that give the city its name. A branch of the Mittelland Canal reaches the steelworks, and the Salzgitter See provides a large lake near Lebenstedt.
A Salzgitter map poster makes the city's unusual structure clear. In black and white, you see clusters of streets set apart like islands, the long rectangle of the plant, rail lines and the canal branch linking them. It is a map about how a city can be assembled rather than grown.
Separate districts, many of them former villages, sit apart across open land. The map looks like a group of small towns rather than one continuous city.
The large industrial site, served by a branch of the Mittelland Canal and dense rail tracks, forms the biggest single shape on the poster.
A lake near Lebenstedt forms a smooth open shape beside the planned grid of the city's largest district.

People from Salzgitter often identify with a particular district, whether Lebenstedt, Bad, Thiede or another. A single map showing them all together is a good reminder of how the city holds together.
