Te mapa
Samokov lies in a broad basin between the Rila and Vitosha mountains, roughly 60 kilometres south-east of Sofia. The Iskar River flows past it on its way north to the Iskar reservoir. On the map, the town sits where mountain valleys open onto flatter ground, and the road to the ski resort of Borovets climbs south into the forest.
The town's name comes from the water-powered hammers once used to forge iron here, an industry that made Samokov prosperous in Ottoman times. In the nineteenth century it was home to a celebrated school of icon painting. Its centre still preserves a large mosque and an ornate public fountain from that era.
A Samokov map poster suits skiers who pass through every winter, hikers heading into Rila, and families with roots in the town. A compact centre, the river and mountain roads leaving in every direction give the map a strong, grounded composition.
The river flows north past the town from its source high in Rila, adding a clear natural line to the map before reaching the reservoir downstream.
A mountain road leaves Samokov to the south, climbing through forest to one of Bulgaria's oldest ski resorts, only a short drive away.
The old core, with its mosque, fountain and churches, forms a dense cluster of streets that stands out clearly within the wider town.
