Popova Šapka lies on the slopes of the Šar Mountains in northwestern North Macedonia, above the town of Tetovo. It is a small resort by Alpine standards, made up of hotels, chalets and holiday houses spread loosely across a high shoulder of the mountain. From above there is no dense centre, only scattered buildings, a few internal roads and ski slopes opening onto the broad terrain above.
The approach is a long road that climbs from the Polog valley in steady bends, linking the resort with Tetovo on the plain. The Šar Mountains form part of the border region with Kosovo and are known for wide, rolling high pastures rather than jagged rock walls.
