Samsun is the largest city on Turkey's central Black Sea coast. From above, it stretches along the shore in a long, narrow band, with hills rising quickly behind the coastal strip. To the west and east, the wide deltas of the Kızılırmak and Yeşilırmak rivers push out into the sea, and this part of the coast forms a broad bulge on any map.
A coastal road and a tram line follow the shoreline through much of the city, with parks and promenades on the seaward side. The harbour sits near the centre. Inland, the streets climb the slopes in less regular patterns, following valleys and ridges.
