San Severo stands in the northern part of the Tavoliere delle Puglie, the broad agricultural plain of the province of Foggia. The countryside around it is flat and carefully divided, much of it planted with vines, and the town is well known for its San Severo wines. The map shows fields in long parallel strips reaching almost to the edge of the streets.
The historic centre is dense and irregular, with narrow lanes, small piazzas and many baroque churches rebuilt after the earthquake of 1627. Around it runs a ring of wider avenues that follows the line of the old walls, and beyond that the later town spreads in more regular blocks.
