Te mapa
Sandown lies on the east coast of the Isle of Wight, facing the English Channel along the broad sweep of Sandown Bay. From above, the town follows the coast. An esplanade and seafront run along the beach, and behind them Victorian and later streets fill the rising ground inland. To the north, the chalk headland of Culver Down closes the bay.
The town grew as a seaside resort in the nineteenth century after the railway reached the island's east coast. Its pier, long sandy beach and promenade still define its character. Sandown is also home to Dinosaur Isle, a museum reflecting the island's standing as one of Europe's richest sites for dinosaur fossils. To the south it merges with neighbouring Shanklin.
A Sandown map poster is shaped by the sea. The coastline draws a long, clean curve down one side of the sheet, and the pier reaches out into the water as a single straight line. It makes a relaxed, recognisable print for holiday homes, island families and anyone who has spent summers on the Isle of Wight.
The bay forms a wide, smooth arc along the eastern side of town. It is one of the most elegant coastlines on the island and the defining shape of the poster.
Sandown Pier runs straight out from the seafront. It is a small but clear detail that gives the map an instantly recognisable seaside signature.
North of the town the land rises to Culver Down, a chalk headland where the bay ends. On the map, the streets give way here to open downland.
