The valley shapes Sarajevo. The city runs roughly east to west along the Miljacka River, a narrow strip of streets hemmed in by forested slopes and mountains, and from above it looks almost linear. At the eastern end, the Baščaršija old bazaar forms a tight cluster of lanes. Westward the valley widens into Austro-Hungarian blocks and later socialist-era districts.
Walking west from the bazaar takes you through centuries of planning. Ottoman lanes give way to the grid and embankments of the Austro-Hungarian period, followed by the long apartment blocks of Novo Sarajevo and Novi Grad. A series of small bridges crosses the river, including the Latin Bridge, near which Archduke Franz Ferdinand was assassinated in 1914.
Sarajevo hosted the 1984 Winter Olympics, and the slopes of Trebević, Igman and Bjelašnica still frame the city. A Sarajevo map poster captures its unusual combination of dense urban fabric and mountain landscape close at hand. A narrow ribbon of streets follows the river, and hillside neighbourhoods reach up the valley walls in fine, irregular lines.
The river runs the length of the city. Its embankments and small bridges form a continuous thread that ties the old town to the western districts.
The old Ottoman bazaar at the eastern end of the valley appears as a dense knot of short, irregular lanes. It looks markedly different from the grids further west.
Steep hillsides rise directly from the city on both sides. The streets that climb them appear as winding lines that trace the shape of the valley.

Koteā ko Sarajevo
For people who grew up in Sarajevo, or who lived there and left, the city's shape is instantly recognisable: a narrow valley, a river and hills that feel close enough to touch. A map preserves that geography simply and directly.
Customise the title and subtitle with a neighbourhood, a street or a meaningful year, and edit the coordinates line to mark a precise place. Choose Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand, and order a digital download or a printed poster.
