Te mapa
Sastamala lies in the Pirkanmaa region of western Finland. It was formed in 2009 when the town of Vammala merged with the neighbouring municipalities of Mouhijärvi and Äetsä. Its centre, the former Vammala, sits by lake waters that belong to the Kokemäenjoki river system. On a map, water and forest dominate, and settlement follows the shorelines and the roads between them.
The town centre is compact, with a small grid of streets along the water. The wider municipality spreads across farmland, lakes and woods, with villages scattered between them. Sastamala is known for the medieval stone Church of St Olaf in Tyrvää. It was destroyed by arson in 1997 and carefully restored, largely through local effort.
A Sastamala map poster works at more than one scale. Close in, it shows the lakeside streets of the centre. Further out, it becomes a composition of lakes, winding shores and thin roads, closer to a landscape than a town plan. Either way, the Finnish lake country gives the print a restful, open character.
The former Vammala town centre lines the water's edge, with a compact street pattern that stops where the lake begins.
Lakes and channels of the Kokemäenjoki river system run through the area. At wider scales their long, irregular shapes dominate the map.
Beyond the centre, small villages from the merged municipalities sit among fields and forest, linked by thin roads that thread between the lakes.
