Te mapa
Schramberg lies in the central Black Forest in the Rottweil district of Baden-Württemberg. It is often called the town of five valleys, because several valleys meet here around the Schiltach river. On a map the built-up area forms a star, with streets following each valley floor while dense forest covers the steep slopes in between.
The town is closely tied to clockmaking. Junghans, one of Germany's best-known watch and clock manufacturers, was founded here in the nineteenth century, and its factory buildings remain part of the townscape. Industrial blocks, workers' housing and older town houses sit side by side along the narrow valleys.
Above the town stands the ruin of Hohenschramberg castle, on a ridge overlooking the valleys. Winding roads climb the slopes towards outlying districts and farms. A Schramberg map poster shows how tightly the terrain has shaped the town, the streets filling every usable strip of valley floor.
Streets and houses branch out along several valleys meeting in the centre, giving the town an unusual star-like outline surrounded by forest.
The Junghans works and other former industrial sites line the valley floor, a reminder of the town's long history as a centre of German clockmaking.
The castle ruin sits on a wooded ridge above the town, reached by winding paths that trace the contours of the hillside.
