Schweinfurt lies on the River Main in Lower Franconia, northern Bavaria. The river is the strongest line on the map. It curves through the city with the historic centre on its northern bank, while harbour basins, islands and industrial areas occupy the land along the water. Residential districts climb gently to the north, and bridges stitch the two banks together.
The city is known worldwide for rolling bearings. Its factories made it an important target in the Second World War, and heavy bombing reshaped much of the town. Rebuilding produced a mix of restored historic buildings and post-war blocks. Today it is also home to the Museum Georg Schäfer, which holds a major collection of nineteenth-century German art.
