Semenyih lies in the Hulu Langat district of Selangor, south-east of Kuala Lumpur and a short drive from Kajang. It began as a small settlement on the Semenyih River and has grown steadily as the capital region expands. New townships and housing estates now fill former plantation land around the older town centre.
On the map, the old centre is a small cluster of streets near the river. Newer developments spread out in the neat, looping layouts typical of Malaysian housing estates. To the east the land rises toward forested hills, and upstream sits the Semenyih Dam reservoir, whose irregular shoreline stands out among the green slopes.
The town is home to the University of Nottingham Malaysia campus, whose grounds form a distinct open space among the housing. Nearby Broga Hill is a popular sunrise hike.
