The Zambezi channels
West of town the river runs in several braided channels, with sandbars and cut-off loops between them, and these fine lines fill much of the frame.

Te mapa
Senanga sits on the east bank of the Zambezi in Zambia's Western Province, and from above the river shapes everything. Wide sandy channels split and rejoin to the west, with oxbows and seasonal lagoons scattered across the plain, while the town keeps to slightly higher ground. The built area is compact, a loose arrangement of roads and plots that thins quickly into open country.
This is the southern part of the Barotse floodplain, the Lozi heartland, where the Zambezi spreads across the grassland every rainy season and draws back again in the dry months. The water rises and falls each year, and that rhythm has shaped where people settle, farm and travel. On a map you can see it in how the roads keep their distance from the lowest ground.
A Senanga map poster sets a handful of town streets against the soft, unruly lines of one of Africa's great rivers. In black and white the contrast is plain to see: the few firm lines of the settlement on one side, and on the other the long, branching patterns of water that have organised life in this part of Zambia for generations.
West of town the river runs in several braided channels, with sandbars and cut-off loops between them, and these fine lines fill much of the frame.
The town stands just above the seasonal flood line, so the map shows a clear border between the settled grid and the open, low-lying plain beyond.
A few roads run out of Senanga along the drier ground and link it to the rest of Western Province. They thin quickly into long single lines across the land.
