Sertânia lies in the Moxotó area of Pernambuco's sertão, the semi-arid interior of north-eastern Brazil. The town is compact, with a central grid of streets around its squares and a handful of main roads running outward across the plain. Beyond the last houses the map opens into wide, lightly marked terrain, where dirt tracks connect farms and small communities scattered through the caatinga scrub.
Rainfall here is irregular, and much of the landscape is organised around that fact.
