Shangri-La Map Poster & Print
Shangri-La sits at about 3,200 metres in the Dêqên Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture of northwestern Yunnan. The town was called Zhongdian until 2001, when it took the name of the imaginary valley from James Hilton's novel. It lies in a wide basin surrounded by mountains, with grassland and wetlands around its edges.
The old town, Dukezong, is a small cluster of winding lanes and timber houses around a hill topped by a large prayer wheel. Much of it was rebuilt after a fire in 2014. The newer town extends around it in wider, straighter streets. To the north, Ganden Sumtseling Monastery climbs a hillside in tiers.
