Te mapa
Shanhaiguan, a district of Qinhuangdao in Hebei, stands on a narrow strip of land between the Yan Mountains and the Bohai Sea. For centuries it was the key gateway between the North China Plain and Manchuria, and the Ming dynasty's Great Wall was built through it. The name means pass of mountains and sea, which describes its position on the map exactly.
The old town is a compact walled square, its streets meeting at right angles inside the ramparts. On its eastern side stands the great gate known as the First Pass Under Heaven. From there the wall runs south to the coast, ending at Old Dragon's Head, where it juts into the sea, and north into the mountains toward Jiaoshan.
In 1644 the Ming general Wu Sangui opened the pass to the Qing armies, a turning point in Chinese history. A Shanhaiguan map poster shows why the place mattered: a fortified grid in a narrow corridor, a wall joining mountain and sea, and a coastline that turns the whole composition toward the water.
The historic town is a neat square enclosed by walls, with a cross of main streets inside. It is a clear fortified plan that stands out sharply on the map.
At the coast, the Great Wall ends where it meets the Bohai Sea. A short spur of masonry juts into the water at the southern edge of the map.
The wall runs from the Yan Mountains in the north, through the town and down to the shore, a single stroke joining the high ground and the coastline.
