Te mapa
Nanpiao is a district of Huludao in western Liaoning, set among the low, dry hills that lie inland from the Bohai coast. Its built-up areas follow the valleys, so streets and housing stretch along narrow strips of flatter ground while the slopes around them stay mostly empty. From above, the district looks like several linked settlements rather than one compact city.
Coal mining shaped Nanpiao for much of the twentieth century, and the layout still reflects it. Workers' housing, rail sidings and industrial sites sit close to where the mines were. As mining declined, the district has had to adapt, like many older industrial areas in north-east China.
A Nanpiao map poster shows this terrain-driven plan: roads bending with the valleys, clusters of blocks at the junctions, and large blank areas of hillside. It is a plain, honest picture of a hard-working place.
Housing and streets follow the valley floors, so the district forms long, narrow strips set between the hills.
Rail lines and industrial sites from the coal era still sit among the neighbourhoods and add straight lines to the curving roads.
Wide areas of hillside separate the settlements and appear as open space that gives the print room to breathe.
