Beining, now officially called Beizhen, is a county-level city under Jinzhou in western Liaoning. It sits where the Yiwulü mountains come down to the plain. To the west the land rises into forested ridges, and to the east fields stretch flat toward the lower Liao River. The town's streets form a fairly regular grid around an older central core.
Yiwulü Mountain has been honoured for centuries as one of China's guardian mountains, and the Beizhen Temple dedicated to it still stands near the town. The old centre keeps a pair of Liao-dynasty brick pagodas. The area is also known for its grapes, grown in the fields and on the slopes around the city.
