Haizhou open pit
The former open-pit mine next to the city is a vast terraced depression. Its stepped benches and haul roads create a striking, almost topographic pattern on the map.

Te mapa
Fuxin lies in western Liaoning province, on gently rolling land between the northeast China plain and the hills toward Inner Mongolia. From above, the city's streets form a fairly regular grid of wide avenues and large blocks, broken up by rail lines and a river that crosses the urban area. Farmland extends beyond the edges in every direction.
Coal has shaped the city's history. Mining expanded rapidly here in the twentieth century, and the Haizhou open-pit mine at the edge of the city grew into one of the largest in Asia. After decades of extraction it was closed and turned into a mining heritage park, but the vast terraced pit remains clearly visible from above.
Like many industrial cities in northeast China, Fuxin has been working to move toward new industries, and parks and new districts now soften parts of the grid. A Fuxin map poster shows a city with an unusual centrepiece. Orderly streets and rail yards sit beside the stepped, concentric outline of an enormous man-made crater.

Railway lines built to serve the mines run through the city. Their long straight lines and wide yards divide the grid into distinct sections.
Much of the city follows a grid of broad avenues and large blocks. This clear, practical plan contrasts with the irregular shape of the mine.

Koteā ko Fuxin
Many families in Fuxin have worked in the mines for generations, and the city's map is a direct record of that history. Together, the grid and the great pit make a composition that is both personal and quietly dramatic.
