Shanwang Map Poster & Print

Shanwang lies in central Shandong, in the hilly country of Weifang's inland counties. The land here rises and falls gently, and the roads bend to fit it rather than running dead straight as they do on the coastal plain.

The name is known to geologists. The Shanwang fossil beds in the surrounding area have produced well-preserved Miocene plants, insects and animals, and they are protected as a geological park. On a street map the fossil beds don't appear, but they explain why the name shows up in textbooks as well as on road signs.

The town itself forms a modest grid around its main roads. From there, lanes wind outward through fields and small villages. A Shanwang map poster shows that meeting of order and terrain: straight lines in the centre and curving routes where the hills begin.

01

Central street grid

A small, regular grid marks the town centre. It is the most orderly section of the map and stands out clearly against the countryside around it.

02

Hill-following roads

Outside town, roads curve with the rolling ground. They draw looser, more organic lines than the grids of the Shandong plain.

03

Scattered villages

Small settlements sit along the country roads. They add clusters of detail across the surrounding farmland.
