Te mapa
Shima occupies the southern tip of the Shima Peninsula in Mie Prefecture, within Ise-Shima National Park. Its coastline is a classic ria shoreline, flooded valleys that form long, branching inlets. Ago Bay in particular is broken into countless fingers of water and small islands, and on a map the line between land and sea twists constantly.
The sheltered bay has long been a centre of cultured pearl farming, and the rafts and oyster beds are part of the landscape. The area is also known for the ama, the women divers who still gather shellfish and seaweed along this coast. Small fishing settlements sit in the coves, joined by roads that wind over wooded headlands.
In 2016 Kashikojima, an island in Ago Bay, hosted the G7 summit. A Shima map poster shows few roads and a great deal of intricate coastline, making it more of a portrait of water and land than a street plan.

A small island inside Ago Bay, connected by bridge and known as the venue of the 2016 G7 summit. It appears as a compact shape surrounded by calm water.
Roads cross the forested headlands between coves, linking fishing settlements. They draw thin, winding lines through the wooded land between the arms of the sea.
