Te mapa
Shimosuwa sits on the northern shore of Lake Suwa in Nagano Prefecture, in a basin ringed by the mountains of central Honshu. From above, the town fills the flat land between the lake's edge and the slopes behind, with streets running along the shore and climbing into narrow valleys.
In the Edo period this was Shimosuwa-juku, a post town where the Nakasendō and Kōshū Kaidō highways met, and the old routes can still be traced through the centre. Hot-spring inns line the former highway, and the town's two shrines sit a short distance apart within the street grid.
Those shrines, Harumiya and Akimiya, form the lower shrine of Suwa Taisha, one of Japan's oldest shrine complexes. Every six years they host the Onbashira festival, when huge logs are hauled down the slopes. A Shimosuwa map poster sets the shrines, the highway town and the lakeshore together in a single, balanced frame.
The smooth curve of the lake fills one side of the map, a broad open shape against the dense streets of the town along its northern edge.
The Nakasendō and Kōshū Kaidō converged here, and the old post-town streets still form the spine of the historic centre.
Harumiya and Akimiya, the lower shrine of Suwa Taisha, appear as wooded plots set into the town's fabric a short walk apart.

Koteā ko Shimosuwa
Shimosuwa appeals to people who have walked the old highways, soaked in its hot springs or watched Onbashira. The lake and the shrines make a map with a strong focal point and a sense of long continuity.
You can personalise the title and subtitle, perhaps with a festival year, and edit the coordinates line. Paper and Sand suit a shrine town, and Classic black & white, Noir and Blueprint are also available.
