Shu Map Poster & Print
Shu is a town in Zhambyl Region in southern Kazakhstan. It lies on the Shu River, also known as the Chu, which flows out of Kyrgyzstan and across the steppe. The land around the town is wide and flat. On the map, the town appears as a compact grid set in a large open space.
Shu is best known as a railway junction. The line from the south toward Almaty and the line running north across the steppe meet near the town, and the station and rail yards take up a large part of its footprint. The long tracks give the map its strongest straight lines.
A Shu map poster shows the Soviet-era street grid, the wide railway band and the river running past. Irrigated fields and channels near the river leave a faint pattern of lines around the town. On the dry steppe, the fields and channels matter as much as the streets.

The river passes near the town in soft curves. It gives the flat composition a natural line to balance the tracks.
