Te mapa
Soledad lies in the Salinas Valley in Monterey County, California, one of the most productive farming regions in the country. On a map, the town is a compact grid of streets beside the highway that runs the length of the valley. On every side, the geometry of large agricultural fields takes over, with the Salinas River running along the valley floor.
The town takes its name from Mission Nuestra Señora de la Soledad, founded in 1791, whose restored chapel stands south of town among the fields. To the east rise the Gabilan Range and Pinnacles National Park. To the west are the Santa Lucia Mountains, which separate the valley from the coast.
A Soledad map poster shows a small town set in a vast agricultural landscape. The grid is neat and tight, and the fields around it are drawn as large rectangles cut by irrigation lines and farm roads. The river adds one free-flowing curve to an otherwise ordered picture.
The river runs along the valley floor near town, the one natural curve among the straight lines of fields and roads.
The streets form a compact, regular grid beside the highway, a small dense block surrounded by open farmland.
The eighteenth-century mission sits south of town among the fields, a reminder of the valley's Spanish colonial history.
