Te mapa
Sonepur lies in Saran district, Bihar, on the northern bank of the Ganges at its confluence with the Gandak. Patna lies across the water to the south and Hajipur to the east. On a map the town is framed by wide rivers, sandbanks and shifting channels, with its streets arranged on the drier land between them.
The town is best known for the Sonepur Mela, a large fair held each year around the full moon of Kartik and traditionally famous for its trade in cattle and other animals. The fair spreads across wide grounds near the confluence, and the nearby Harihar Nath temple draws pilgrims who come to bathe where the rivers meet.
Bridges over the Gandak and the Ganges add strong straight lines to an otherwise fluid landscape of water and sand. A Sonepur map poster captures that interplay: the confluence at the centre, the rail and road links reaching toward Patna and Hajipur, and the compact town between two of the great rivers of the plains.
The Gandak joins the Ganges beside the town in a broad meeting of channels and sandbanks. It is the most striking natural shape on the map.
The open ground used for the annual Sonepur Mela lies near the rivers. During the fair this large expanse fills with temporary streets and stalls.
Road and rail bridges span the Gandak and the Ganges. They are drawn as sharp straight lines linking Sonepur with Hajipur and Patna across the water.

Koteā ko Sonepur
Sonepur is tied to memories of the mela, the river ghats and crossings to Patna. A map of the confluence is a fitting tribute for those who grew up there and a striking image for anyone drawn to the great rivers of northern India.
