Songbai is the administrative centre of the Shennongjia Forestry District in western Hubei. It is a mountain town in the full sense. Steep, wooded ranges surround the valley, and there is so little flat land that the town can only grow in one direction, along the valley floor.
The result is a long, thin settlement. Streets run parallel to the river and are connected by short cross streets. Roads leave the town by following side valleys and climbing into the mountains in switchbacks. Shennongjia is a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its forests, and the town is the gateway to that landscape.
