Te mapa
South Pasadena is a small city between Pasadena and Los Angeles. On a map it is mostly a close grid of residential streets, with longer avenues running north to south. Its western edge follows the Arroyo Seco, a natural channel that brings a winding line into an otherwise regular layout, with parkland and hillside streets along it.
The Arroyo Seco Parkway runs along that edge. Opened in 1940, it is often described as the first freeway in the western United States, and it still curves through the landscape the way it was designed to. Just as well known is the city's decades-long opposition to extending the 710 Freeway through its neighbourhoods, which is part of why the local street grid still looks the way it does.
Mission Street and the light rail stop give the city a small, walkable centre. The streets around it are short and closely spaced, and they gradually give way to curving lanes toward the hills in the south-west. A South Pasadena map poster shows a city that has stayed small and detailed while larger roads were routed around it.
The dry channel and its green banks run along the western boundary, adding a meandering line and open space against the dense residential grid.
The historic 1940 parkway curves along the arroyo, and its gentle bends are very different from the straight engineering of later Los Angeles freeways.
A compact commercial street near the light rail stop anchors the city, with the finest-grained blocks on the map clustered around it.
