Te mapa
West Covina lies in the eastern San Gabriel Valley, east of downtown Los Angeles. From above its structure is clear. The San Bernardino Freeway, Interstate 10, runs across the northern part of the city, with a flat grid of arterial roads and residential blocks around it, typical of post-war Southern California.
The city grew quickly in the 1950s, when orchards and farmland gave way to tract housing, and it became a commuter suburb of Los Angeles. Its large shopping centre next to the freeway has been one of the area's main retail destinations for decades, and the civic centre sits nearby.
A West Covina map poster shows the change from flatland to hills. In the north the streets form a regular grid. Toward the south, where the city climbs into the San Jose Hills, they turn into long, curving roads and cul-de-sacs that follow the slopes. That change in pattern is the most distinctive part of the map.
The freeway crosses the city from west to east as a wide, confident line, with interchanges and frontage roads anchoring the northern half of the map.
In the San Jose Hills the grid gives way to looping streets and cul-de-sacs that follow the contours. They draw a softer, more organic pattern.
Long straight avenues divide the flatter districts into large residential blocks, the classic layout of a mid-century Southern California suburb.
