Te mapa
South Shields stands on the south bank of the River Tyne where it meets the North Sea, and its map is framed by water on two sides. The river mouth is protected by long piers, and the town's streets run up to the riverside on one edge and to the beaches and promenade on the other, with terraced housing filling the ground in between.
The town has a long history. On a hill above the river are the remains of Arbeia, a Roman fort that supplied troops along Hadrian's Wall. A ferry crosses the Tyne to North Shields, one of the oldest continuous ferry routes in the country, and the coastline south of the town includes sandy bays and cliffs.
A South Shields map poster captures a town shaped by its river and its coast. The dense grid of terraces, the curve of the harbour and the straight line of the pier give the print strong edges, and the open sea offers a clean, calm area that balances the busy streets.
Long stone piers extend into the North Sea at the river mouth, forming two slender lines that frame the entrance to the Tyne on the map.
Much of the town is laid out in closely spaced terraces, giving the poster a dense, rhythmic texture typical of North East coastal towns.
Along the eastern edge the promenade, parks and sandy bays trace the coastline, producing a smooth curved boundary between the town and the open sea.
