Te mapa
Staraya Russa lies in Novgorod Oblast, on low ground just south of Lake Ilmen, where the Polist and Porusya rivers flow toward the lake. It is one of the oldest towns in Russia and has long been associated with salt production from local springs. The rivers divide the town into separate parts, and the map shows how bridges and embankments join them back together.
In the nineteenth century, the mineral springs made Staraya Russa a well-known spa, and the resort park with its pavilions and pools is still a defining green area on the map. Fyodor Dostoevsky spent summers here and bought a house in the town. The town became the model for the setting of The Brothers Karamazov, and the house is now a museum.
The streets follow a largely regular plan on both sides of the water, with churches and monasteries marking the older districts. A Staraya Russa map poster brings together the braided rivers, the ordered blocks and the open ground of the resort. The composition rewards close reading, much like the novels written here.
Two rivers flow through the town toward Lake Ilmen. They split it into separate quarters joined by bridges and give the map its main structure.
The resort around the salt springs forms a large green space of paths and water features, a quieter, open area set against the regular streets.
Much of the town follows a planned grid of straight streets on both banks, which gives the neighbourhoods a calm, orderly texture on the map.
