Stretford lies in the borough of Trafford, southwest of central Manchester. From above, you see a classic Manchester suburb: terraces and semi-detached streets, arterial roads leading toward the city, and a Metrolink tram line cutting through. The Bridgewater Canal passes along the northern side, and the River Mersey forms the southern edge, lined with open ground. The Trafford Park industrial estate spreads to the north.
The town is best known for Old Trafford, home of Manchester United, and for Old Trafford cricket ground, home of Lancashire, both within easy reach. The Bridgewater Canal, opened in the 1760s, is often called the first canal of the Industrial Revolution in Britain. Longford Park provides a large green space among the housing.
