Stryi lies in the Lviv region, south of the city of Lviv, where the plain begins to rise toward the Carpathians. The Stryi River runs past the town, bringing water from the mountains, and its floodplain and channels mark one side of the map. The older centre has a denser, irregular street pattern, surrounded by later districts.
The town is a railway junction, where lines from Lviv split toward the Carpathian passes and neighbouring regions. Tracks, yards and the station area make sweeping curves and parallel lines through the urban fabric, one of the most distinct features on the map.
