Sueca lies in the Ribera Baixa south of Valencia, on the flat alluvial plain between the Júcar river and the sea. From above, the town forms a dense, rounded core surrounded on almost every side by rice fields, whose straight irrigation channels and field boundaries create a strikingly regular pattern. To the north the paddies merge with the wetlands around the Albufera lagoon.
Rice is central to Sueca's identity. The town hosts a long-running international paella competition every year, and much of the municipality is given over to paddies that flood and dry with the seasons. Along the coast, a separate line of beach settlements runs parallel to the shore, divided from the town by the open fields.
