Te mapa
Sumé is a municipality in the Cariri region of Paraíba, one of the driest parts of north-eastern Brazil. The town is small and compact, with a straightforward street pattern spreading from a central area. Outside it lies caatinga, the scrubby semi-arid vegetation of the sertão, crossed by long country roads.
Water is the key to the map. The town takes its name from the Sumé river, and a reservoir on the river nearby has been essential to life in a region with little and irregular rain. On a map, the reservoir and the course of the river are the main natural shapes breaking the open land.
A Sumé map poster shows a town defined by its setting: compact streets, a few roads heading into the Cariri and water held in a dry landscape. In black and white, the empty space around the town is as meaningful as the streets themselves, and the result is a spare, restrained print.
The river that gives the town its name runs through the municipality, a thin but important line in this semi-arid landscape.
A reservoir on the river stores water for the dry months and appears as the largest natural shape near the town.
Dry scrubland covers the open country around Sumé, shown as wide empty space crossed only by long, straight rural roads.

Sumé is a place people remember for its light, its dryness and the closeness of its community. A clean map of the town is a meaningful piece for anyone from the Cariri, wherever they live now.
