Te mapa
Sŭngho 1-tong is an urban neighbourhood in Sŭngho district, on the eastern side of Pyongyang and some distance from the capital's central districts. It lies in the lowlands of the Taedong River basin. From above it shows the ordered pattern of North Korean planned housing, with regular blocks, straight streets and large open spaces, set within a wider landscape of fields and low hills.
Much of the map is defined by the surrounding terrain. The Taedong and its tributaries shape the land around the neighbourhood, and the flat river plains are divided into regular farm plots. Hills rise at intervals, their slopes marked only by a few tracks. Because little information is available about small places here, the map is often the clearest picture of how the neighbourhood is laid out.
A Sŭngho 1-tong map poster is a quiet, geometric image: a compact settlement of straight lines, a broad river valley nearby and an even pattern of fields. Printed in monochrome it has a strong documentary character. It captures a place that few people outside the country will ever see in person, through its streets and landforms alone.
Residential areas are laid out in regular rows and rectangular blocks, a clear example of planned urban form that reads cleanly at any print size.
The river and its tributaries run through the low ground of the region, drawing wide, gentle curves across the flat farmland.
Around the settlement, rectangular farm plots cover the plains, while scattered low hills interrupt the pattern with rounded, unbuilt shapes.
