Swinton is a town in the City of Salford, Greater Manchester, a few miles northwest of Manchester city centre. Its map is a dense weave of terraced streets and interwar and postwar housing estates, the pattern of an industrial Lancashire town that grew around coal mining and textiles before merging into the wider conurbation.
The A580 East Lancashire Road, opened in the 1930s as one of Britain's first purpose-built inter-city roads, cuts a straight line through the area. Nearby, the M60 orbital motorway swings around the western side of Manchester, while parks and the town centre break up the dense residential fabric.
